Finland's city of Turku rejects Linux, opts for Windows

The headline this morning in Finland's Tietoviikko newspaper is not good: "Turku uskoo linuxiin." In other words, Finland second largest city, Turku population around 200,000 - is dropping its Linux plans.

Instead of switching to OpenOffice and Linux, Turku will now switch to Windows XP and to Windows Server 2003, the newspaper reports.

It will migrate the existing NT servers and workstations to the newer Windows versions in a phased manner, the report says.

Turku's consideration of Linux as a desktop platform dates right back to 2001, when the city's Committee of Computer Operations recommended a move of office platforms to OpenOffice by the end of 2003, with a later change of existing Windows systems to Linux.

A pilot scheme involving some 200 Linux workstations was introduced. But it would seem now that Windows has prevailed.
