SpikeSource serves made-to-order Linux

SpikeSource announced an enhanced version of its flagship SpikeSource Core Stack, which will now include preconfigured made-to-order installations.

With the new version, developers choose from prebuilt stacks of open source components and applications, either for specific uses or to customize a stack, by selecting from a list of applications, libraries, Web servers, and tools.

"The stacks are not just made-to-order, but are dynamically configured and installed," said Joaquin Ruiz, SpikeSource's vice president of products.

Ruiz added that SpikeSource handles the testing and integration of components and applications for customers.

Although some industry analysts believe the made-to-order stacks hold potential to speed the adoption of open source software, one said it is the testing and maintenance of those stacks in real-world environments that remains the major appeal.

"When you explain SpikeSource to developers, it isn't until you talk about the integration testing of components that the light bulb goes on. When they realize that none of the open source projects have done any testing for the other projects they are interested in, they realize this is a significant time saver," said Michael Goulde, senior analyst at Forrester Research.

Also this week, SpikeSource will present a white paper outlining a proposal for a ratings system to evaluate the merits of open source components.

"We will debut the Business Readiness Rating model we hope to turn into a formal metric for scoring open source products and projects. Like car ratings you have when you are looking to buy, we want to establish an objective metric around the business readiness of open source components," said Nick Halsey, vice president of sales and corporate marketing at SpikeSource.

In addition, the company has set up a Web site to solicit opinions on the proposed scoring system.
