Tacit upgrades WAN acceleration line

Tacit Networks on Tuesday added e-mail acceleration, distributed software management capabilities, network and Web services, increased performance features, and flexible product packaging options to its wide-area network (WAN) optimization products.

For e-mail acceleration, Tacit now offers Ishared Exchange Services, an acceleration and consolidation technology for branch office e-mail services that natively integrates with Microsoft Exchange.

"E-mail between the central office and remote offices uses a great deal of bandwidth and this product addresses that problem," said Noah Breslow, vice president of marketing for Tacit.

Ishared Exchange Services accelerates the transmission of e-mail attachments over the WAN, while simultaneously eliminating redundant attachment delivery to branch offices and consolidating e-mail attachments to a single centralized location. By using file-aware technology, Ishared Exchange Services delivers only one e-mail attachment per branch office, regardless of how many users have been sent the file, and file differences are transmitted via the WAN only when e-mail attachments are revised and saved.

"The product also integrates natively with Microsoft Exchange, so there are no issues when Exchange is updated," said Breslow.

Also new with this release, Tacit Networks' Ishared products are available as both a software-based solution for deployment on existing server platforms within customers' infrastructure as well as on the company's appliances and IBM, Dell, and Hewlett-Packard hardware platforms.

Tacit Networks' latest product upgrade also includes extensions to Tacit Networks' core technology, including the introduction of wide-dictionary compression that allows data redundancies across files to be recognized and redundant transfers eliminated for improved WAN performance and bandwidth savings.

Other branch office services available as part of this product upgrade include Ishared Networking Services, which provide domain controller, DNS, and DHCP functionality without the need for per-office dedicated network servers; Ishared Web Services, which boosts branch office Web access and Web-enabled application performance and reduces bandwidth usage through Web caching; and Ishared Management Services, which enables software distribution, upgrades, and maintenance for all branch office IT data and services from a single, centralized location.

Tacit Networks' Microsoft Windows-based Branch Office IT Solution product upgrade is in trial deployments now and will be generally available in July. Ishared Exchange Services and Ishared Networking Services are offered as product options on the company's Ishared Remote solution. Tacit Networks' software-based solution will also be generally available in July.
