EDS and former Ericsson subsidiary, Damovo, have won a joint $16 million managed services contract to provide voice communications services to the Australian Customs Service (ACS).
EDS is the outsourcer and Damovo the sub-contractor.
The five-year-contract, Damovo's biggest ever, will see the company replace existing NEC PABX equipment with IP-based offerings from Mitel Networks, a Damovo global partner.
ACS chief information officer, Murray Harrison, said Mitel and Damovo won the contract through their understanding of IP telephony.
Evolving to IP telephony, he said, would also reduce operating costs while improving network efficiency and scalability.
Damovo Australia managing director, Robert Schwartz, said the company already had 50 per cent of the corporate enterprise/government department voice services market. The new project added to this.
The former Ericsson corporate networks division claims to maintain the largest PABX network in Australia.
"The approach we are taking with the ACS of protecting their existing investments while migrating them towards a converged environment in line with their specific business needs, is proving to be a winning formula in the marketplace for us," Schwartz said.
Mitel Networks Australia managing director, Gwilym Funnell, said the contract underscored the compelling value that an evolutionary approach to IP telephony could deliver to a large distributed organisation.
